IPL 2017

On May 21, 2017, the finals of the 10th Edition of IPL went down and it seemed like the perfect end to the latest edition of this extravaganza with the nail-biting finish. 8 teams battled out, and Mumbai Indians finally emerged as the victorious team. But there were special performers across the teams who we think deserved the spotlight.

So, we at CupoNation, did some analysis to come up with who we think are the best players across the three categories of batsmen, bowlers and all-rounders. We based our analysis on at what cost the players were picked up on the auction, and their various statistics at the end of the league stage. We picked up our data of the players' performance from the IPL's official website, and for the prices we headed over to ESPN Cricinfo's auction page for 2017. For the players who were not selected during the auction, but received a contract later on like Imran Tahir and Irfan Pathan, we went with their base price.

For the batsman, we kept a cut off of minimum 200 runs; for bowlers, a minimum of 10 wickets; and for all-rounders, a minimum of 100 runs and 5 wickets. We ended our analysis on the day of the first elimination match between Rising Pune Supergiant and Mumbai Indians on May 16, 2017.

With that in mind our little investigation and analysis led to the following results….

  • The best
    batsman in
    IPL 2017
Rahul Tripathi
Rising Pune Supergiant

For a batsman in IPL, the number of runs he scores are important. However, consistency, the rate at which he scores them, along with the ability to explode at various points of times with boundaries are other criteria to look at. With that in mind, we assigned 50% weight to the number of runs, 25% to strike rate, 15% to average and 10% to boundaries and realised that Rahul Tripathi was the best batsman this year, with him being marginally ahead of Nitish Rana
  • The best
    bowler in
    IPL 2017
Siddharth Kaul
Sunrisers Hyderabad

When we were creating a similar comparison for the bowlers, we realised that the biggest factors apart from wickets would again have to be their consistency, their strike rate, and not to mention their economy in this batsman hungry world. With that in mind, we assigned 50% weightage to the wickets, 15% to average, 25% to the economy rate, and 10% to the strike rate, and realised that Siddharth Kaul marginally triumphs Yuzvendra Chahal as the best buy for money.
  • The best
    All Rounder
    IPL 2017
Pawan Negi
Royal Challengers Bangalore

Last year when he was picked up by Delhi Daredevils for 8.5 crores, and then failed to justify that with either bat or ball, much was made of Pawan Negi. However, in our analysis, he completely justifies that price tag by being in the top 5 in both batsmen as well bowlers, and hence securing the top spot in the all-rounders list, where he is closely followed by Daniel Christian. Surely the price tag is going up next year?
